Skin Redness
Skin redness has many causes, can occur for a short time after irritation, e.g. due to weather influences, shaving, aggressive cleaning, or can persist permanently.
It can appear in patches or over a larger area, be accompanied by itching and skin dryness, and acutely by feelings of heat and burning.
Disruption of the skin’s protective barrier almost always plays a role in skin redness. Hypersensitive nerve fibers, psychological stress, an increased allergic disposition, inflammations are also possible triggers.
The task of skin care for skin redness is to inhibit inflammation, strengthen the immune system and the protective barrier of the skin, soothe the skin.
The following describes some active ingredients that have efficacy against skin redness.
Polyphenol from fruit peels relieves rosacea-typical skin redness
In rosacea, the veins are dilated and discolor the skin reddish. The clinical picture is accompanied by inflammation, itching and, in severe cases, irregular skin swellings.
The active ingredient with the trade name Carboxy-Methyl (CM)-Naringenin-Chalcone (Mibelle Biochemistry) reduces capillary blood flow and the associated skin redness typical of rosacea. It also has anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to inhibit the release of proinflammatory cytokines.
The active ingredient is based on a derivative of the polyphenol naringenin chalcone, which is found, for example, in the peel of citrus fruits. CM-Naringenin-Chalcone is a stabilized form of the active molecule, which ensures full activity in cosmetic formulations.
- In vitro: evidence of reduction of cytokine release in stressed keratinocytes
- clearly visible reduction of skin redness on the face of test subjects with rosacea
The active ingredient reduces skin redness in sensitive skin. It protects and soothes stressed skin and has an anti-inflammatory effect.

Strong skin barrier = anti-redness protection
The skin is equipped with a strong protective system. The microbial part is the skin flora consisting of the skin’s own bacteria and fungi, which inhibit the growth of pathogens. The chemical protection is provided by the acid mantle with a pH value of 4.7 to 5.7. The mechanical protection results from the uppermost layers of the horny layer. Close to the skin surface are the dendritic cells and form the outermost post of the immune system, and the horny cells also perform immunological tasks and produce defense substances against dangerous pathogens.
It is no wonder that inflammation, dehydration, and skin redness occur more easily when the protective system is damaged. To support it, an active ingredient from baker’s yeast comes in handy:
Sodium carboxymethyl β-glucan (trade name CM-Glucan Granules, Mibelle Biochemistry) stimulates the skin’s immune system, strengthens its defenses, has a moisturizing effect, reduces transepidermal water loss, accelerates skin renewal after damage, inhibits the harmful oxidation of skin lipids. The skin becomes noticeably more resistant, appears smoother and firmer.
The effectiveness of CM-Glucan Granules for sensitive, stressed skin has been proven in clinical studies.

Beta-glucan from baker’s yeast strengthens the skin’s immune system
In allergic skin reactions, such as eczema, the body reacts hypersensitively to certain substances and produces increased amounts of class E immunoglobins and pro-inflammatory interleukins. Inflammatory reactions, reddening of the skin, itching and also nodules are characteristic.
CM-Glucan Forte (trade name, Mibelle Biochemistry) is designed to balance the skin’s immune system. It reduces antibody production and the adhesion of pus-forming Staphylococcus aureus bacteria to the skin.
The divalent magnesium ions bind water molecules, have anti-inflammatory properties and improve epidermal proliferation and differentiation.
Application tests confirmed the soothing effect on eczema symptoms. The skin felt soothed, better moisturized and smoother.

Recommended concentration for use: 0.02 – 0.1%
Effect: anti-reddening of the skin, reduces eczema symptoms, tested on sensitive skin
Sea anemone soothes sensitive skin
Sensitive skin reacts to the smallest environmental stimuli with itching and skin redness. This is due to an overreaction of the pain receptor TRPV1, which is responsible for the perception of tissue-damaging stimuli.
Scientists have found a special protein in the venom of a sea anemone (Heteractis crispa) that inhibits the TRPV1 receptor. In order to use this protein for skin care, Mibelle Biochemistry has developed a pentapeptide containing the TRPV1 inhibitor sequence of the sea anemone protein. The active ingredient, trade name SensAmone P5, soothes sensitive skin and reduces skin irritation and redness.
In vivo tests have shown that SensAmone P5 increases the sensory threshold of the skin from the first application. The skin reacted less sensitively to both a current stimulus applied to the facial skin and in the lactic acid sting test. Subjects perceived a reduction in sensitivity and a decreased stress response of the skin.
Fact Sheet:
INCI: Pentapeptide-59, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Phenethyl Alcohol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Maltodextrin, Aqua/Water.
Trade name: SensAmone P5
Description: liquid, water soluble, without alcohol, without preservatives.
Recommended concentration: 1 – 2 %.
Effect: soothes sensitive skin, anti-redness, tested on sensitive skin
Magnolia inhibits inflammation aging
Inflammatory processes are a major cause of aging diseases. Triggers include damaged proteins and pro-inflammatory cytokines that emanate from damaged cells. While acute inflammation repairs damaged cells, chronic inflammation impairs the normal functioning of body tissues. This is why we speak of inflammatory aging or infamm’ aging. Chronic inflammation leads to premature breakdown and aging, and can be associated with permanent skin redness due to the damage it causes.

In Chinese medicine, the bark of magnolia (Magnolia officinalis) has been used for centuries to treat stagnation of qi energy and anxiety disorders or allergic diseases, among others. Magnolia contains two pharmacologically active components, magnolol and honokiol, which inhibit inflammatory processes and aging.
The active ingredient with trade name MAXnolia (Mibelle Biochemistry) is based on magnolia bark extract and counteracts inflamm’ aging of the skin.
Thanks to its anti-aging effect, it helps to increase skin firmness and hydration, reduce permanent facial redness and crow’s feet, and improve the youthful appearance of the skin.

Prickly pear soothes stressed skin immediately
Shaving, wind, sun mean stress, especially for sensitive skin, and can cause skin redness. Prickly pear, which was already appreciated by the Aztecs, inhibits the release of stress factors from sensory neurons and soothes and calms irritated skin.
The plant also contains piscidic acid, an iron chelator that prevents the formation of harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the skin. In addition, it has a high moisture-binding capacity, which quickly makes the skin feel soothed and comfortable.

Cocoa relaxes the skin
The feel-good effect that we know from the pleasure of chocolate, cocoa also unfolds for the skin. It relaxes and smoothes the skin and is ideal as an anti-skin redness and anti-stress component.
The effect is based on the oil-soluble feel-good substance anandamide contained in cocoa beans, which is also produced by our brain. In addition, anandamide binds to a receptor that is also present in certain skin cells.
The active ingredient with the trade name NanoCacao (Mibelle Biochemistry) makes use of these properties. It consists of the lipophilic portion of the cocoa bean, encapsulated in a nanoemulsion.
- In vitro, it has been shown to cause temporary relaxation of skin muscle contractions
- Application tests: the smoothing of the skin’s micro-relief was visible
