Vegan certification
Most people associate a vegan lifestyle with abstaining from animal foods. We can also apply this attitude to other areas of our lives. To our bathroom, for example. More and more consumers are looking for vegan certification when buying cosmetic products.
For "real" vegans, this is a matter of course anyway. This group is also growing: according to the Allensbach Market and Advertising Media Analysis, 1.13 million people described themselves as vegan in 2020. Compared to 2019, this represents an increase of 180,000. These "real" vegans, who give up all animal products out of deepest conviction and not on a passing whim, also make a clear distinction between vegan cosmetics, natural cosmetics and cruelty-free cosmetics. The three product groups should not be confused with each other.
Definition of vegan cosmetics
Vegan cosmetics are free from ingredients made from or by animals. It therefore contains neither honey nor animal collagen or milk protein. However, vegan does not automatically mean cruelty-free. The legislator has not yet precisely defined the term "vegan" and it is not protected.
Definition of cruelty-free cosmetics
In Germany and within the EU, animal testing for cosmetic products has been banned since 2013. Nevertheless, there are still loopholes. For example, the ban only applies to substances that are used exclusively in cosmetics. Substances that can also be found in other product groups, however, may still be tested on animals. Completely animal-free cosmetics can only be recognized by seals such as the internationally valid "Leaping Bunny". However, these products are not automatically vegan, as they may contain honey or beeswax.
How does vegan certification work?
The fact that the vegan lifestyle is polarizing is nothing new. Nevertheless, veganism is clearly on the rise, and so are vegan cosmetics. It is becoming increasingly important for brands, although there is also a problem: the certification of vegan cosmetic products, i.e. vegan certification. As with natural cosmetics, there are now many different seal providers, all of which have established different criteria. The criteria for this vegan certification are usually not even scientifically based, but were simply "made up". This in turn leads to a lot of confusion and a great lack of transparency. In addition, the many different vegan certifications take a lot of time. For example, we first have to ask the raw material suppliers for the respective questionnaires from the certifiers for our customers. This process takes many weeks and sometimes even several months, as countless questions need to be clarified. You might think that the vegan certification providers have now created extensive databases on all raw materials, but unfortunately this is still not the case. The process starts all over again each time, mainly for financial reasons.
Raw material suppliers are annoyed
Of course, it is perfectly understandable that most raw material suppliers are more or less annoyed. Some of them even refuse to fill out the numerous forms for vegan certification. They often issue their own vegan statements, but the providers of vegan certification are not satisfied with this.
This creates an annoying vicious circle for everyone involved. What is particularly unpleasant for us is that our customers inevitably assume that we are not in a position to carry out vegan certification.
