Hyaluronic acid: a miracle ingredient for eyelash care products
One active ingredient used in eyelash serums is hyaluronic acid. It can already be found in countless skincare products as it can bind a lot of moisture, plumping up the skin and reducing fine lines. However, hyaluronic acid is also capable of thickening and lengthening eyelashes. In fact, it performs four tasks at once in eyelash care: and that very successfully!
Firstly, the eyelashes become slightly darker with regular use of a hyaluronic acid eyelash serum, so that they automatically become more expressive. Secondly, hyaluronic acid makes the lashes smoother and softer, meaning they no longer break off so easily. Short and thin lashes are also visibly strengthened. The fourth effect: hyaluronic acid stimulates the growth of the hairs. If required, it can even be used for the eyebrows. Hormone-containing eyelash serums: Caution is advised
Many eyelash care products contain hormones. These are usually an artificially produced form of prostaglandins. The hormones prolong the natural growth phase so that the lash line becomes thicker.
However, the hormonal effect can lead to undesirable and, in the worst case, permanent side effects: especially if the serum gets into the eye during application or during the application time. Despite the utmost caution, this can always happen. Ophthalmologists therefore also take a critical view of products containing hormones for eyelash care. After all, eye drops containing prostaglandins are subject to medical prescription and are only prescribed for appropriate indications.
Eyelash serums, on the other hand, are freely available for sale and accessible to everyone: improper use could have fatal consequences under certain circumstances. This is why hormone-free products are the best choice for eyelash care.
Natural alternatives: plant extracts and oils
In addition to hyaluronic acid, there are of course other active ingredients that are suitable for eyelash care.
The castor oil mentioned at the beginning of this article actually has a positive effect on our eyelashes, but it should not be applied pure as it is not very user-friendly. However, it is highly recommended as an active ingredient in a serum for eyelash care.
In general, plant extracts and oils are a very good alternative to hormones, which are considered critical. Recommended examples are jojoba, almond, olive and argan oils. They penetrate deep into the eyelashes and supply them with valuable nutrients. With their valuable omega-6 fatty acids, they can also stimulate growth. If the fine hairs break easily, panthenol can be used as an active ingredient.
