Fennel Extract
extrFennel (Foeniculum vulgare) as a plant species belongs to the genus Apiaceae and is used as fennel extract in cosmetics. The Latin term means hay. From a fist-sized white bulb grow long stems on which feathery leaves and at the end are yellow flowers. The extract is obtained from the fennel bulb. The original cultivation area was the Mediterranean countries, especially their coastal regions. Today, fennel is grown all over the world. The plant grows preferably in dry and warm places. The country that grows and processes the most fennel today is by far India. Among the Mediterranean countries, only Morocco is still in the upper ranks. In Germany, fennel grows quite well under the above conditions and can be harvested from June to November. The seeds of the plant, which are botanically regarded as its fruit, and the bulb are used.
Fennel was used in ancient times for its healing properties. The Romans also knew the power of fennel. Fennel also has its place in mythology: when Prometheus stole fire from the gods, he did so with a smoldering stem of a fennel plant.
The healing properties of fennel
Fennel is also a regionally grown plant, the ingredients of which have some positive effects on health.
Fennel extract is said to have a soothing effect on gastrointestinal problems, obstructed bronchial tubes, glaucoma, lactation, and menopausal symptoms.
Especially the good effect on glaucoma has been successfully researched in India, where an alternative treatment with fennel will be tested as soon as sufficient clinical studies are available.
Fennel shows antibacterial effects that approach the effect of standard antibiotics. Its use as a natural preservative would also be conceivable in the future.
Fennel may also have fungicidal activity. In some countries, harvested fruits and vegetables are protected from mold infestation in this way.
Like many other medicinal plants, fennel extract is antioxidant and thus neutralizes harmful so-called free radicals.
Improving digestion has an indirect beautifying effect on the appearance of the skin. However, fennel is also directly a positive ingredient in external application in skin care.
Fennel extract in cosmetics
Fennel extract has proven to be extremely successful in skin care. It contains a variety of active ingredients, including vitamins A, B and C, essential oils, mineral salts, and silicic acid, which have a particularly positive effect on the skin.
The skin tightening and regenerating effect of fennel extract is impressive. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and a slight antiseptic effect, which is especially pleasant for sensitive skin. Tired and stressed skin is refreshed, and bruises heal faster. Fennel is also used to fight cellulite and sagging breast tissue. Its application makes the skin softer and smoother, and the binding of free radicals protects skin cells.
In addition, fennel extract has antioxidant properties that can help fight free radicals and protect the skin from harmful environmental factors. It has a calming effect and soothes inflammation, while moisturizing the skin and supporting its natural moisture barrier. Last but not least, studies suggest that fennel has potential anti-aging effects as it stimulates collagen production and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
All of these positive effects of fennel extract are especially beneficial for brittle, flaky and dry skin. It’s no wonder, then, that fennel extract is increasingly being used in cosmetic skin care products to make the most of its many benefits.
