Brazil nut oil

Brazil nut oil

The Brazil nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa) grows in the middle of the tropical rainforests of South America and from its nuts the great brazil nut oil can be extracted. This giant of the jungle can grow to a height of more than 55 metres and bears leaves up to 60 centimetres long and pretty white-yellow flowers. The large capsule fruits, weighing up to 1500 grams, contain the seeds or Brazil nuts, which are surrounded by a very hard shell. They have a pleasant nutty taste and are rich in nutrients. Particularly noteworthy is the high selenium content. Global Brazil nut production in 2017 was 84,000 tonnes, with Brazil being the largest producer with a share of 39 per cent.

Extraction of this oil

The valuable Brazil nut oil is extracted from the seeds by cold pressing. For this purpose, the shelled, cleaned and crushed seeds have to be pressed through a spindle press. Brazil nut oil is characterised by a light yellow to yellow colour and a nutty, slightly buttery aroma. It is used in both cold and hot cuisine and is particularly suitable for salads and baked goods. The smoke point is 208 degrees Celsius. Thanks to its many valuable ingredients, Brazil nut oil is considered a real booster for the immune system in the kitchen. It also provides the body with energy. Connoisseurs therefore also call it the “gold of the rainforest”. Interestingly, it also contributes to the protection of the rainforest, because Brazil nuts only grow in almost untouched, healthy and intact areas. The indigenous collectors who pick up the nuts from the ground are thus also guardians of the rainforest at the same time, because their activity prevents possible deforestation.

Brazil nut oil in cosmetics

Face creams and body lotions, shower gels and soaps, hair shampoos and conditioners: Increasingly, Brazil nut oil is also being used in cosmetic formulations. No wonder, because its composition is impressive. It not only contains vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, C and E, but also the valuable trace elements selenium, magnesium, sodium, calcium, potassium, copper, iron, zinc, and phosphorus. It is also rich in omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids. Linoleic acid is contained in particularly large quantities. Brazil nut oil is very well tolerated and has excellent moisturising properties. Dry skin becomes more supple and smooth, the natural skin barrier recovers and gains strength.

In addition, Brazil nut oil is also ideal for anti-aging products because it fights free radicals, which prevents premature skin ageing and wrinkles. In addition, Brazil nut oil can protect against UV rays and stimulate the formation of new cells.

If the hair is dull and brittle, it literally comes alive after using Brazil nut hair care products. If the hair ends are brittle, concentrated tip fluids with Brazil nut oil are recommended. However, it is important that the oil is free of artificial additives and comes from guaranteed natural cultivation. It should only be used for cosmetic formulations in its pure and unadulterated form.
