Natural soaps

Natural soaps, organic soaps, perfumed soaps

The use of soaps is a natural part of our everyday life. But hardly anyone knows that the soaps available in supermarkets are usually mixtures of sodium or potassium salts of higher fatty acids. Components of solid soaps such as curd soaps are usually sodium oleate, sodium stearate and sodium palmitate, while soft soaps (also called soft soaps) usually consist of the corresponding potassium compounds. However, this was not always the case. The very first soap recipes, for example, can be traced back to the third millennium BC and mainly contained a mixture of oil and plant ash. In the 19th century, soap also became popular in Europe and the craft of soap boiling came into being.

The fact that soap has a cleaning effect at all is partly due to its ability to reduce the surface tension of water. Compared to other substances, soap has a much greater wetting capacity, so that dirt can be loosened and rinsed off quickly and easily. Even grease and oil stains can be removed in this way, as they are emulsified by the soap.

The production of industrially manufactured soaps

The main components of soaps are therefore fatty acids, which are obtained from animal and vegetable oils and fats. To break down these fats, they are boiled with sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide solution. Experts call this process saponification. The alkali salts of the fatty acids as well as glycerine are produced by the decomposition. In industrially manufactured products, the actual soap is exclusively the alkali salts of the fatty acids, as the natural glycerine is extracted. Afterwards, common salt is usually added to remove impurities. This “basic soap” can then be used to produce a wide range of different varieties. Well-known varieties are the classic curd soap, fine soap or toilet soap or the bile soap used to remove stains from textiles.

The advantages of natural soap

People who have never used natural soaps before are often surprised by their versatility and caring effect. And indeed, natural soaps have many advantages over industrially produced soaps. The most important advantage is that natural soaps are much gentler on the skin. They still contain the natural glycerine that is produced during the saponification process, whereas it is removed during industrial soap production.

After all, glycerine is a valuable moisturising factor that protects the skin from drying out and moisturises it. With many industrially produced soaps, the skin often feels very rough and dry after washing hands. The glycerine in natural soap, however, prevents this unpleasant effect.

But it is not only the glycerine that protects our skin from drying out. Another important advantage of natural soaps is the so-called superfatting. They contain a varying proportion of free, unsaponified oils, which means that they have a pleasant refatting effect. This means that natural soaps are also recommended for very dry skin.

Pure natural soaps are stirred by hand in the traditional way using the cold saponification process and are free from synthetic chemicals and chemical fragrances. Preservative additives are also not necessary. In terms of composition and ingredients, the soaps can be perfectly adapted to a specific skin type or area of use.

Pure natural soaps also consist of high-quality vegetable oils. Examples are olive oil, rapeseed oil and coconut oil. Depending on the type of soap, nourishing oils such as jojoba oil, avocado oil, shea butter or cocoa butter can be added.

Storage tips for natural soaps

Natural soaps should be allowed to dry well after use for optimal yield. A soap dish with a drain, a magnetic soap holder or even a simple piece of loofah or an absorbent cloth is best suited for this purpose. The shaving soap should also be able to dry well, so the jar should not be closed at home. The lid is only used when travelling or on the road.
