SHB

Sodium Butyroyl Hyaluronate SHB – better known under the INCI designation Sodium Butyroyl Hyaluronate is considered an optimal ingredient for high-quality anti-aging formulations and is particularly suitable for the care of stressed, damaged and aged skin. It is characterised by its extraordinary abilities as a radical scavenger and prevents the degradation of the body’s most important hyaluronan molecule. However, lengthy and costly research and development were necessary for SBH to become a biocompatible biomaterial that can be used for cosmetic purposes. But the effort was worth it!

What is Sodium Butyroyl Hyaluronate (abbreviated SHB)?

Everybody has to deal with a more or less pronounced inflammation from time to time. Our skin is often affected, but inflammation can also affect almost any other part of the body. Inflammation is caused by reactions of our immune system. If they are controlled, the immune system can also be regulated. The biologically active, short-chain fatty acid butanoate or butyrate regulates the inflammatory process in the human body. However, it is degraded quite quickly in our organism, and it also has a negative organoleptic effect, which means that it makes for a rather unpleasant smell. The Italian B2B biotech company SIGEA, which specialises in the development of innovative and patented products, has now found a way to create a new biomaterial using its proprietary technology: SBH. This innovative and now patented molecule is a polysaccharide. It consists of the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid butyrate. It is obtained by condensation of hyaluronic and butyric acid. Both are found in the human body

Sodium hyaluronate butyrate or SBH has several impressive advantages.

Due to its special resistance to enzymatic hydrolysis, the moisturising effect of sodium hyaluronate butyrate lasts extremely long. In addition, SHB has a significantly stronger antioxidant and anti-irritant effect. The biomaterial enters into an improved interaction with the lipid unit of the epidermis due to the stronger lipophilicity of the butyrate residues, which in turn means that SHB has a particularly strong positive effect on the skin overall. The otherwise unpleasant odour of butyrate was also successfully eliminated. However, although numerous positive properties were achieved for SBH, the benefits and properties of the original molecules were completely retained. Or to put it another way: only the shortcomings were eliminated. This is not the only reason why SBH is indeed an exceptional and ideal ingredient for modern anti-ageing products.
